This is not the old complaint that “clickbait is bad.” It is a claim about industrial organization. The publisher who resists compression forfeits traffic to rivals who do not. The race does not select for truth; it selects for legibility under scrolling conditions. A nuanced explanation of monetary policy cannot compete with “Central Bank Crushes Workers” or “Central Bank Saves the Economy.” The latter pair converts ambiguity into a binary frame that can be processed mid-commute.

Authority accrued to those who projected certainty, even when that certainty rested on sand.

The careful legislator disappears into committee transcripts.

Platforms amplify this dynamic because their architectures are optimized for scalable signals, a key factor in social media attention dynamics that rewards clarity over nuance. Algorithms rank content based on engagement metrics (likes, shares, comments, watch time etc). These are binary or near-binary signals. A user reacts or does not. Content that produces stronger, faster emotional reactions generates more data for the system to process. Simplified claims are easier to parse and easier to react to. They slot neatly into categorical moderation systems that must classify billions of posts per day.
